High performers, when their time is up on whatever kinda team they are on, miss ONE thing the most. High performers miss one thing the most – most of the time. It’s not what you think, most likely.
High performers miss the locker room.
Here’s why. Of course they miss the competition, the limelight, the glory, and the thrill of victory – just not the most. After tough practices, hard fought victories, or excruciating defeats – the locker room is their place. The locker room is their sanctuary. Community comes quickly when you get tired together.
The locker room is where tired teammates give and receive encouragement, where a teammate picks them up, where a truth teller hits them with tough truth, and where they share laughs and celebrate as ONE. The locker room is where a teammate feels understood, feels accepted, and takes the time to reflect on what just happened. The locker room is where the high performer kinda soaks it all in. The locker room is a special place with special people and searing memories. People miss this place…
The problem with most companies is they do NOT have a locker room. And, they don’t get tired together while trying to get better. All they do is their job. All they do is try to win games. No wonder they get so tired of one another. BTL practices are all about the locker room and getting tired together. BTL practice is a catalyst for creating community.
Want better performances? Build your locker room. Make it safe. Community will come. We just gotta get folks tired enough to tell the truth…

Great post, Chet. I read the blog regularly and I think, for someone new to BTL as I am, you have encapsulated a lot of the value, psychology and essence of practice in these few paragraphs. Thanks for adding to the BTL experience!
