Give this gift…

I deeply dislike the common management refrain around empowerment. People misuse this term all the time. Today, a client made the mistake of writing this in his productive action and talking to me about it to boot. I asked him a curious question. I asked him if he understood the definition of the word. He did. He told me it meant “to give power to another.”

I asked him why he thought he could give another what they already possessed? He went all quiet and then changed his word. He told me he is going to encourage his team. He’s going to give another courage. We can all encourage. Go give this gift, my friends. Give encouragement. Encourage your team to face their fears, grab the reins, and get on with the power struggle within. You cannot give them power. You can, however, give them some encouraging words that just might work their way in. Go.
