Fear, tension, performance, and being ONE…

Practice 37 was one of those FM, baby kinda practices. Everybody played. Everybody contributed. Everybody was thinking. Everybody was confused. What?

Yup. Confusion is part n parcel to every BTL practice. Vinny, a young star in the making, simply surfaced his own. He asked a curious question regarding tension and performance. Here’s how the head of his system answered. I kinda like it and I hope it makes you think even though it may be kinda confusing since you weren’t present…

“Fear and tension are the enemy of performance. Too much tension, that is. Fear and tension cause me to grip too tight, which is no bueno in golf and business and life. I want to spend more time finding the love in my work…I want to remind myself why I walked on the course to play the game in the first place. Find the love and deal with the tension. Don’t let the tension make me grip too tight and kill my swing.

My PA: Write about what I love about our business and our team.

What I love about our business is that we can make a huge impact for our customers, we can be totally different, just by doing the right things every day. Just by simply doing things the way we think they should be done, by treating people how we think they should be treated, by acting how we think is the right way to act, we differentiate ourselves from all the jokers that are in this business and don’t care as much as we do. That is all we have to do to make our customers’ lives a whole lot easier, help our employees and vendors succeed, and grab market share as a result. Its all execution. And we have a team that is learning to execute better every day. So nothing is stopping us. That is what I love about this business.”

Execution, turns out, is mostly about doing what’s right, first. The right way to do it evolves from this foundation. Few systems commit, I mean really commit, to doing what’s right as a discipline. You can measure your own commitment by counting your excuses. No excuses is the bar.

“What I love about this team, is how we are growing…not in numbers, but as individuals. I look around at many faces that have been here since I started, as well as faces of folks that have joined us more recently, and I can honestly say I think every single one of us is learning and growing. The numb nuts have moved on. No one is static. No one is just coasting like they are content with where they are. We are all striving to make our work better, more honest, more fun, less hassle, more repeatable, more process driven, faster, higher quality…and I think most are carrying that over into their lives too…making themselves and their families better off just a little bit at a time. That tells me this team is different…extraordinary. I truly believe that. That is super freaking cool when you think about it.”

Yes, Jdub, you and your team are super freaking cool. You are becoming ONE, distinct, deeply connected, and BTL. 267 more practices – we oughta be there 🙂

Reader, who are you becoming? Reader, what kinda team are you and your teammates becoming? Are you being good and doing good in whatever system you’re in? Are you making excuses and rationalizing away your performance? ONE person can change any system, remember.

Be ONE…

  1. Chet – so true. Too much tension KILLS performance. Golf is a perfect example. Too much tension, too many thoughts…an absolute killer. Same in business. Same in life. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
