“No regrets” is becoming a common refrain of today’s youth. When asked about some really bad decisions, toxic relationships, hook ups that led to some kinda STD, and all kinds of benders that ended in blackouts or worse, the majority simply responded with “no regrets.” Don’t take it from me. Read Christian Smith’s book titled, Lost in Transition and see for yourself. You won’t regret it.
Today, after listening to my client recount a regret of his from his distant past I told him something and it surprised him. I told him to hold onto his regret, it’s good for him. You see, regret is a powerful tool. Don’t beat yourself up for it but don’t lose the regret. Regret is good. Regret shows us we’ve still got a conscience. A conscience is a horrible thing to lose. Without a conscience we will find ourselves lost in all kinda transitions. Regret is good.
Regret keeps us from repeating…

Amen to that, Chet! couldn’t agree with you more. I do regret many things I’ve done over the course of my life and those decisions and experiences have been significant lessons and turning points in my life. All of which make me who I am today, and wiser for it. I think along with the “no regrets” refrain, we also hear “you only live once” or YOLO as an excuse for all kinds of bad behaviors.
