Calm with an edge….

Today, during practice thirty in a system preparing to transition power, we toughened up the CEO in training by teaching him the hard way. We put him under the exact pressure he’s struggling to handle with another. We tried to make him fail and he obliged. He simply reflected the emotions I sent his way. He failed the test. He allowed me to trigger his emotions to get the best of him. He was unable to remain calm under duress. He is failing forward. He is preparing to pass the real test when he IS the CEO. Today he toughened up a bit in an area of weakness. His leader and I put him there on purpose.

You and I do not gain mastery on our own. Masters are built by Masters who know the buttons to push to build specific skills with the master in the making. Good is the enemy. Emotional mastery is essential. Leaders, you see, must learn to regulate emotions in the room. Most, like my young client, simply reflect whatever emotions come toward them. Leaders, the kind that get our commited best, remain calm under fire. The team trusts the calm, consistent, calculated leader who absorbs the craziness without changing their stride.

And, these same masters have an edge to ’em. Calm is their center and yet passion oozes out with purpose. Masters are calm with an edge. Do you see this?

If I interview your team how will they describe you? When was the last time you asked them? Who is training you to calm your triggers when your face starts to fire up and your extremeties signal you’re about to blow? Who is making you fail in practice because they want to make you better?

Calm with an edge has gotta be built. Who is helping you regulate you…
