High performers share lots of similarities. Here’s one we learned a bit more about in practice 118 this morning. High performers like Matt Biondi back in the day, kick their own without dragging themselves down. High performers encounter adversity just as you and I do. The difference is the response. High performers, for instance, when their performance isn’t what they want it to be don’t begin by blaming another, beating themselves senseless, or beginning to lose hope. High performers begin by taking responsibility and taking action. Good.
So, if you wanna improve your performance in any endeavor develop the discipline of kicking your own ASS because you’re aiming at something worth working toward. And, do NOT let yourself get all Debbie downer in the process and start dragging ASS as a result. Kick. Don’t drag. High performers are hardest on themselves and do it without getting down. Yesterday in practice one with an OSU team of grapplers and today in practice 118 with kman’s team of krazies, both teams had some high performers who were given the chance to get better by looking in the mirror. Only time will tell if they have the guts to tell themselves to “keep working” when adversity threatens to overwhelm them in a moment of truth. Few develop this discipline. Few learn optimism. Few face the brutal facts of reality and remain hopeful. Few keep working when nothing seems to be working. Few.
High performers are born and built. Many have the opportunity but only a few make it. What is your little voice telling you when adversity strikes? What are you doing about it? What disciplines are you building to face your facts, kick your own, and get better instead of bitter as a result?
Good…
