Fear of the future…

All humans have some kinda fear about the future. According to Don Brown in his book, Human Universals, fear of the future is the third highest human fear – right behind the fear of death and fear of the dreaded outsider. Yikes…

Everyday in this blessing called BTL, we have a front row seat seeing this fear played out in the world of work. Your team fears the future ’cause it’s never felt more uncertain. Your team fears its future ’cause it feels so out of their own, personal control. Your team fears the future ’cause that old spiritual furniture of the greatest generation has gotten beyond thread-bare. For most, in fact, the furniture has been completely removed. The room, absent belief, leaves ’em alone in the material world in search of meaning that cannot get beyond that of their own making. Yikes…

Humans fear the future and you, as a leader, most definitely do as well. However, as leaders, you gotta lead anyway. So, as you try to make sense of your market, your associates, your competitors, customers, and collaborators, it might help you to remember this truth. You do still at least believe in truth, don’t you? Wanna help your team keep moving in the sea of uncertainty we all can now officially call home? Remember this…

You can be wrong about the future. The team will forgive you and soon forget. You cannot, however, be unclear. This is why when it comes to the Overarching Vision in your OPUS, we make you rinse it till it’s squeaky clean. It’s gotta be you. You gotta see it. It’s gotta be so clearly in you that the team can see it when they see you. You see, humans have a God designed need to know where they’re going, why it matters, and that their leaders believe we’re eventually gonna make it. They will forgive the many course corrections along the way. They just can’t take it when the leader is the least bit unclear when calling out the change in direction, structure, or design. You can be wrong, my friend, and the team will forgive you.
