Yesterday was a banner sports day in the Scott household. The Jayhawks won and the Buckeyes put on a dominating performance too. One was on the hardwood; one, the mat.
Tomorrow the Sunflower showdown will have all of Kansas watching to see if WSU can pull off a shocker. However, to at least this Jayhawk, it would hardly qualify as much of an upset. Moving to the mat…
Tonight, the OSU wrestling team will take it’s shot at history. Logan Steiber will attempt to become only the 4th grappler EVER to win 4 National Championships. Ever. Nate and Kyle (freshmen) will try to win their first National Championships. And, the OSU team will attempt to win their first team National Championship, ever. Ever. Amazing.
Watching these young men workout is like watching warriors prepare for battle, I imagine. When we hold BTL practices in their wrestling room it’s not like the pretty conference rooms I’ve come accustomed to. We grab the playbooks, thirty five sweaty bodies, and make ’em read, write, speak, listen, and learn how to become ONE,distinct and deeply connected. Ten days ago when we concluded our last practice prior to Nationals, I told them the next time we practiced they would be practicing as National Champ’s and we would be working at repeating. I believed it then. I’m certain they do too. Tonight, however, nothing will be given. They will have to take it.
Remember, nothing worth possessing has ever been given.
So grappies, tonight, take it. We’ll be watching and cheering you on. I highly recommend you too tuning in tonight and switching over from March Madness to a little Madness on the Mat. ESPN’s got the coverage. While you’re at it, check out the photo of Coach Ryan and Kenny following his victory that qualified him for All American status. Pure joy. Pure. Here’s the cool part, there is more joy ahead. Yup, there is. It’s there for the taking my young grapplers. It’s there. You’ve got a job to do. You’ve got an opportunity.
Take it…
