Becoming BTL…

Here’s what it sounds like when you are becoming BTL. This is a client of mine writing back to me his learning from a recent team practice. Hear the clarity in his writing. He has entered the No B.S. zone. Once you take up residence here, you don’t want to leave.

“Taking off the mask is becoming easier as I build into myself and become clear on beliefs and values. This has been a slow road but as I reflect back I see the progress that I am making and enjoy seeing the improvement. The larger change is my commitment to discipline and inward focus to improve my personal performance. It is much more fulfilling to make changes and focus on myself and lose a little bit of the control that I have been focused on with others. The good ones when challenged will follow. The performance conversations are easier to have when I am strong in my CORE and not afraid of what the retaliation might be from another. My feelings are “bring it” I can handle this and I know that if someone cares enough to challenge me from belief than I can harness that feedback into getting better.

My Productive Action- 1 – Deliver the message without the bun. Give CCD feedback in the moment- both POSITIVE and NEGATIVE. Stop living in the gray area and mix it all together. 2 – Stop the Gossip. When my leaders come to me I will listen, then respond with: How are you addressing. Coach them in the moment to correct behavior/performance. 3 – 360 Review, after reading your 10 questions I am going to have a 360 review specific to me. 4 – Quarterly shadow- Once a quarter I am going to spend a FULL day with a team member. First up is Maria. I will work beside her and learn about her work ethic, process, and thoughts. We’ll do grounds, work orders, projects, etc. It will give me a new perspective on the job and also be with them.”

This is what it looks like when you are gaining strength and humility as bookends. How do your PA’s reflect upon you? Do you own them or is someone else still authoring them? Are you becoming BTL?
