Today, during practice 132 with kman’s team of krazies, Batman turned into some perceived tension. You see, he has picked up a vibe from some of his teammates regarding his performance. Specifically, his performance regarding “turns.” He thinks there is tension regarding turns. “Turns” is a term specific to kman’s industry and it refers to the time when one resident moves out and another resident moves in. Performance during turns matters because there is only one moment to make a first impression, isn’t there.
Batman did a good thing. He asked to be hit with the truth regarding his performance. A great thing will be in how he responds to his learning. kman’s krazies gave Batman the gift of all kinda ideas, none better than the model that is Tommywantwingy. TWW and teammate Liz have built trust that not only leads to high performance, it leads to inspiration. Don’t believe me, just ask BradLEE. He’ll set you straight. You see, kmans krazies have all kinda conflict amongst them.
There is tension.
Every team has an abundance of tension. There is tension between us and them in every way imaginable. There is tension at home that creeps into work. There is tension at work that creeps into home. There is tension in their micro-teams and tension in the macro ones. There is tension on Warren street and tension on my street. There is tension between ambassadors and other ambassadors, tension between Warren and properties, tension between maintenence and management, and tension between each and every one of our two ears. Humans, remember, are a house divided. Today, however, tension took a turn for the better. Today, tension was talked about out in the open air of a virtuous locker-room. Tension, you see, is not the problem. All teams have an abundance of tension. Fact. Few turn their tension to it’s rightful owner (most often themself) and sometimes to another. Few. Here’s what I hope this team learned today and what I hope you may learn vicariously.
Tension turns when we talk.
Tension in turns, turns when we TALK. Tension turns into trust when we talk honestly. Tension turns into deep trust when we develop the discipline of talking early and often. It’s no accident that Liz and Tommywantwingy have built some deep stuff. These two teammates have had to work at it. There is no easy way to building chemistry. No easy way. Wanna know one of their trust building disciplines. Here it is. Don’t miss this.
Tommywantwingy STOPs by Liz’s office at the end of each day and tells her what got done, what’s getting done, and what had to wait. They TALK. When we study team chemistry, we discover it’s built by thousands of these little things. Little things like Tommywantwingy’s discipline to STOP. I mean come on man, who has the time? Tommy makes time. They TALK. Simple, not easy. Tension turns when we talk. Oftentimes these tension laced talks can be painful at first, second, or even third attempt. Embrace the pain, my friend. Overtime and through adversity, however, the sting is replaced by something magic – understanding. Tension turns into trust when we talk – truth in LOVE always being the aim.
Tension turns when we talk. What’s yours doing…
