Offended or owned…

Recently, I offended a particpant in practice. For those that know me, I’m sure this comes as quite a shocker. I do not try to offend people in practice. I push the people I believe in to make them do what they can. The funny thing about this latest offence was that the person offended was not the person being pushed.

Here’s the learning for you, the leader. One of the quickest ways to know what kinda team you have is to see how they respond to hard truth. My client was late to practice and unprepared. I spelled this out in black and white. When he and I reviewed his performance, post practice, he owned his mistakes. Good. High performers own their own. Normal folks make excuses, even for others. Why?

Cause they know they’re gonna be next.

Wanna better team? Become a better leader. Stop worrying about “being that guy,” and, instead, be someone who stands, speaks and listens to truth, and understands it will only set free the strong. The weak, you see, are always gonna want to hide. Your job, as a leader, is to push for performance because you believe and you care. You’ll know what kinda team you have by their response. The weak are easily offended. The strong? They own it. Offended or owned…
