I’m a little bummed as a write this afternoon. This past week, like most weeks in this work are filled with helping high performers push past previous plateau’s. This kinda push is my sweet spot. I thrive pushing high performers past perceived limits. I get a rush few experience when seeing one of my clients make progress. Every week I see this and it’s exhilirating, at least for me. Sadly, every few weeks I come face to face with something not so satisfying. Every few weeks one of my clients will seek my counsel regarding some form of addiction he’s facing. Most often the addict is not my client but it’s one of his family, friends, or teammates and, as the head of the system, he’s got tough choices staring him in the face. This past week was one of those weeks and it hurt.
Addicts are a part of every human system, I’ve come to believe. And, as we become a society more alone and disconnected we are vulnerable to a systematic increase accordingly. Lead anything and you’ll be facing this fact soon enough. I suggest you get yourself prepared and do some reading in advance on the subject. My latest read on the subject was a few months back and titled, Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari. Leaders gotta deal with all kind of messes, few messier than handling a high performing addict. Your job?
Lead, anyway…
