Daniel, way back in the Biblical day, helped his King translate the words, MENE, TEKEL, and PERES. You see, King Belshazzar couldn’t read “the hand writing on the wall.” And, we’ve been struggling, haven’t we, to read the writing on the wall ever since. Today, at Rock City Church just off OSU’s campus, we listened intently as these three words were translated to us just as they were to King B.
Mene translates literally to the English word numbered. I guess we should all read the hand writing on the wall that we aren’t gonna be here forever. Our days are numbered. We are finite, earthly beings.
Tekel means weighed. Daniel was trying to tell the King that there is a judgement coming. Our lives will be weighed and found wanting. Only Grace can balance our scales.
Peres means divided. Daniel told his King that his kingdom was about to divided. His prophecy would prove true beginning later that night. You and I are divided too. When we look inside we see a soul that understands right and wrong exist. We know what to say and can’t make our mouth say it anyway. We know what to do and can’t seem to make our feet walk that way. We know we’re made for purpose and meaning and yet squander day after day. We know C.S. Lewis was right when he said to put first things first and second things become more, yet we struggle with our busyness to even put first things on the first page of our to do lists.
Today, Krits, Miss, Tay, and I heard a good reminder. We were reminded to anchor ourselves in our creator not just one of His creation. God, help us remember whose we are. God, help us see the hand writing on the wall before it’s too late. God, help us all. God, help me…
