Take 2, not Double-Take

In practice 48, I was reminded (again) of a huge difference between business and… well most everyone else like the performance arts industry, the entertainment industry, sports at all levels, the military, et al.

Most everyone else is USED to practice. They are USED to “Take 2.” They are USED to doing the same drill again, and playing the same riff again, and running the same play over and over.

Business? Not so much. Mostly team members and the head of the system still do a “double-take” when they don’t get it right the first time. Ears turn red. The head of the system’s face turns red. Everyone looks at the facilitator — “what are YOU going to do about this?”

“Ok everyone take a minute and write – WHY does practice so far today feel this way? Why are you and your leader so frustrated”

The team did some good writing about why just dumping problems on the table thinking someone else will deal with it isn’t so helpful. The leader did some good writing on his own curse of knowledge and why he has exactly the team of mules he deserves because he has enabled this behavior for years.

“Ok, let’s reset and run this again from the top – write again about where you want to take practice today only this time do it like mustangs not mules.”

Take 2 was same team and same leader – but utterly different results.

OH wrote: “Here’s a proposal I want to run by you all for creating a subsidiary which could consolidate our research and who I think could run it….”

JG wrote: “Here’s an experiment I want to run with MK to move into an office together and increase both our productivity…”

P wrote: “Here’s a new job description for a role I think I could play leading an intern.”

The leader and team did a different kind of “Double-Take” as we put Practice 48 in the books. This one was fun, and we knew EXACTLY how we wanted to start Practice 49.

Take 2 is the one you want. Get used to “Rinse & Repeat”.

Together We Improve.
