Today, after practice 8, one of the participants gave me some feedback regarding why we’re practicing and where this is going. He challenged me to remind the team of the vision for these practices. He felt we took a step back today and cared enough to connect his thinking to mine. His being proactive and grabbing the reins as he did, told me he is a believer. And, had he spoken up in the moments where we veered off course in his mind, the practice might have been great. He gets it. He, like so many of his teammates, just waits a bit too long to course correct in practice. Good.
Here’s the answer for why we practice with any team. “We Awaken, Challenge, and together we Transform a few individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE, distinct, deeply connected, and BTL.”
Every practice is aimed at unifying individuals. We are all a house divided, every team is too. Where we’re going is toward this aim even though we’ll never arrive. The highest performing teams have a few individuals who deeply trust themselves, deeply believe in their mission, and are deeply commited to getting better. These few are hardest on themselves.
Unity is hard earned whether it’s within or with another. We practice to build this. Today, we made progress toward this aim. We have a long way to go. We need lots of reminders. We’re becoming one and learning what it means to belong to a team. The hardest aim of practice is around the paradox of becoming and belonging. Humans, remember, are at their best when they are a combination of autonomous and in community. This is why we practice – to build both. One, distinct and deeply connected is our language for describing this aim. See you at practice, teammate. Thanks for the challenge and feel free to bring more. Good…
