Write like this…

This is unusually long. Feel free to skip unless you really want to learn to write transformationally…

The most important time in any BTL practice is when you write. I speak this truth multiple times everyday. Let me unpack the latest learning as to why this matters and how to really do it well. First lets unpack why writing matters most.

The world is noisy and getting noisier. Writing brings clarity from within so you can most effectively navigate your world, your way. Know why, know the way – remember? So, when in BTL practice where the aim of our time together is transforming, it only makes sense we don’t just write wilynilly or mindlessly capture bullet points. We write narratives. And, until we’ve mastered writing them authentically from heart & head, we follow a formula that leads us to truth. Here it is. Write like this, please…

Write feeling, thinking, learning and then what you’re going to do with it. Here’s why and how.

Start with feeling. When the aim is transforming we’ve got to tune into emotions. Emotions are your call to action. Emotre, remember, means to move. We write whatever it is we’re feeling. Oftentimes, in BTL team practice, the feeling is overwhelming, especially at first. We feel heavy, burdened, and oftentimes don’t want to move. Trust me, this is normal. Keep writing honestly, you’ll see overtime and through acting in adversity these feelings will change. Deeply.

Next write thinking. We engage the rational part of the brain and capture how we are processing what we just heard, shared, or read. Again we don’t judge our thinking we simply write it out and look at it, well, objectively. You’ll hear me say, oftentimes, “just throw it up.” The aim is to get it out, no matter how messy. Now for the Freakin’ magic. Reflect. Slow it all down and look at feeling/thinking together. Look for alignment. Melody lines. Incongruence. Stop rationalizing (normal) and begin to force the mind to do what it doesn’t naturally do. Learn.

Write your learning. There it is. We stare at it. We rinse it. We rinse it again until its squeaky clean and crystal clear. This, again, takes time until it doesn’t. The first few times you may have to rinse and repeat a few goes. Eventually you’re going to do this with rapidity and it’s gonna feel amazing. Trust the process. Do the work.

Finally we make decisions. We decide what, if anything, we’re gonna do with our learning. We do more than we think. Eventually. Again, for awhile we may actually think more than do. Normal. Takes time to get to the point where change is freakin’ welcomed into our system, not rejected by an “either or” conditioned mind. We start with baby steps of productive action and slowly build momentum toward doing more. It doesn’t take too long for most to love this process and see real gains in the making. Here’s the lynchpin for longevity.

If you want to continue transforming ad infinitum, you must have a big dream fueling the learning. The do do do trail is not the one you want. Dream and do, remember. First things first. This is why the foundational writing is centered around authoring CORE & OPUS first and foremost. Without clarity within and clarity of your aim, transformation is unlikely. Change may happen. Change for the better even. Transformation takes time, consistent effort, and a BIG dream. Your big dream. Transformation takes a truth teller too. All of us have blind spots. None of us is meant to go it a lone. Together we transform. Always together. Remember?

Slow down. Reflect. Write. Write like this…

What are you feeling? Thinking? Slow down. Reflect. What are you learning? Look at your learning, friend. Truth? Write now with crystal clarity. What you gonna do about it? Who do you need to talk this through with? Marry this formula. Embrace the pain and suffering that comes from deep change. Accept it takes time to transform. Keep the mountaintop view in your minds eye. You, Frodo, are on your way. Grab Sam’s hand. Get the ring. You’re ready to leave The Shire. You’ve got a wonderful adventure ahead of you – write ahead, really.

Live hard. Love ❤️ harder…

  1. Thank you for the “refresher”!
I’ve been struggling lately to write deeply.
Your post is what I needed.
    Thank you
    and
I wonder if you can still do the “kick” in your photo without hurting yourself?
I know I cannot. Impressive jump but I remember the story behind it and somewhat being the brunt of it! Such good times!

  2. Simple not easy… iterate the feeling and the thinking if you tend to think before you feel (like me b/c i have to think about what i am feeling before i can figure it out). Iterate. Then re-iterate. Good.
