And dive harder.
Falcons only reach Mach speeds when they’ve decided to go all-in and dive after their prey. When they miss their mark, they pull up before going splat and pick another target. They spend next to no time getting down on their failed attempt. We reward the leader who flies like a falcon. We love being around someone who isn’t afraid to go for it, pull the trigger, and take a calculated risk. Every day, I’m around leaders who value smooth flight over speed. Smooth flight is overrated. Speed and agility matter more. Learn from falcons and take more risks and deep dives. Yeah, baby. Falcons are decisive. Are you?
Chet Scott. BECOMING BUILT TO LEAD: 365 DAILY DISCIPLINES TO MASTER THE ART OF LIVING (p. 339).
Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 316 was “all-in”. We were decisive. We did not hesitate. Ever. It was pretty simple for us – win our part of the war – at all costs. And it was a high price that was paid.
Chris Falkel was killed in action on 8 August 2005 in the Battle of Mari Ghar. ODA 316 (the Spartans) fought masterfully against an enemy that outnumbered them 10 to 1. There were many awards for valor awarded to ODA 316 for the bravery, courage, sacrifice and loyalty that they showed that day.
The picture below is of Jeff Falkel, Chris’ father. He, too, has lived a life full of bravery, courage, sacrifice and loyalty. As has his wife, Dianne and their son, Tim.
Thank you, Jeff, for modeling the way.
Falcons fly high and dive hard.
What about you, leader? Are you a falcon? Or something else that is afraid to fly high and dive hard?
Together We Transform, always – ALWAYS TOGETHER.
