Lots of well meaning coaches, leaders, and parents think they’re being helpful when they tell their athlete, teammate, or child to “just do your best.” Talk about an anxiety pill. What the hell is my best or anybody’s for that matter?
Instead of that ambiguity, leader, be specific, concrete, and actionable. Tell your teammate to write 4 days a week for 3 minutes. This is a very SC&A (specific, concrete, and actionable) kinda productive action. Once they master this discipline set a “reach target” but don’t go nuts. Increase frequency or duration but not both at once, you know. Write 4 days a week for 4 minutes or write 5 for 3 would fit the bill.
Good coaching is an art. Your words matter more than you know. Be ccd (clear, concise, and direct). Give SC&A productive actions. Try harder doesn’t work. Aiming at your best doesn’t either. Your team wants clarity. Clarity, remember, is the obsession of the leader. You can be wrong and the team will forgive you. You cannot be unclear. Make sense?
Live hard. Love harder…
