We’ve been studying sustainable high performance at BTL since our inception back in 2002. If you’re interested in transforming from an amateur to pro and ultimately toward mastery, you’ve got a lifetime of learning ahead. Fact.
What made Brady better than most? What made MJ the best? What made Tiger so scary? What makes The Athlete so good at picking the right site? What makes Ron so good at leading Lockton? What makes Grappy so adept at leading grapplers?
Pattern recognition.
The difference between amateurs and pro’s and pro’s to masters? The speed at which they see the pattern. Bk walks in a dump and see’s what others (me included) miss. Brady reads the defense at the line of scrimmage and makes the right audible based on the pattern he sees (hidden to most, wide open to him). Grappy sees the opponents move before they make it. Ron hears what isn’t said, he embodies Bono’s “vision over visibility.” Tiger imagined shot shapes others said were impossible.
How does one build this essential skill?
Feed the brain. Study film. Read good books in your domain of expertise. Study the best. Develop the ability to find the melody line quickly and never stop the search for another nuance. And, cast the net wide. Study beyond your business or domain of expertise. If you’re in sport, study commerce. If business is your gig, study history (especially Indian, Ron)! If you lead in Church or Synagogue, study the seas, sun, moon, and the stars. You’ll begin to see what others miss. You’ll recognize patterns in the world around you and extrapolate them to your domain. You’re becoming a master. The key?
Feed the beast (the brain). Never stop learning. That, friend, is the masters pattern. Feed it. What would I see if studying you?
Live hard. Love harder…
