The curse of knowledge, according to The Heath brothers, is as follows:
Once you know something, you forget what it’s like not to.
I suffer greatly from this as, most likely, do you, leader. We’ve been working on our craft for decades, you know. We’re lifelong learners. We love sharing our learning and are clueless how to best connect to those who care; but not that much. You, like me, can be a bit of a dumbASS. We tend to assume too much…
Per Rich Nathan (Vineyard Columbus lead Pastor), start by putting the cookies on the bottom shelf. Translation. You’re not dumbing it down. You’re making your knowledge accessible to those you serve. You are not judged by how much you know, leader. You are graded, at the end of the day, by how much your students learn. Fact.
So, yesterday, I put the cookies on the bottom shelf with a team of leaders who missed the mark after our last team practice. It was not their fault. Twas mine. I assumed too much. Missed the mark. So, I course corrected and yesterday’s practice was better. Won’t know how much better until we practice again and see what they’ve done. Truth.
You, leader, have the curse of knowledge. You can’t remember what it was like to be a freshman. You’ve been reminded.
Live hard. Love ❤️ harder. Much harder, dumbASS…
