Great leaders know how and when to wield a high level of energy, similar to a skilled warrior in battle. They know how to turn the room, raise the energy level, lower it, turn the tide in a certain direction. Not everyone has that ability. But the ability itself is not what’s impressive, it’s the mastery of it.
Just like the warrior, skilled leaders know the right time to bring the blade out and the right time to sheath it. When to roar, when to be silent. The restraint, the meekness – that’s the real battle. Wield that ability without restraint and you become a tyrant or a despot, using your ability to serve only your own whims and desires. Restrain yourself and never unleash and you become a shell of what you could be, never bringing out the best in your team or yourself.
Develop your restraint as a leader AND practice using it in the right moments, for the right reasons, to the right degree. Start with clarity – know what you believe about when to use your influence, and when to bring out the influence of others. When to be silent and when to demand more. When to humble yourself and when to move forward with confidence. Once you’ve got clarity, go practice it. Rinse and repeat.
