Before we can go forward with clarity, we start by looking back. Any client of ours starts with Discovery – an 81 question document that digs into who you are, what you believe, and what got you where you are now. If we’re going to get more clarity on the direction you’re headed, it’s important to know directionally what got you to where you are now.
This came up with a client of mine in their discovery. They’re loath to speak up without hearing all sides and they weren’t quite sure why. In talking about some formative experiences in their youth, it became crystal clear why hearing all sides was important to them. At a crucial young age, what they said to an adult figure was often weaponized and used against them. That created a pattern of being very cautious with their words, at least until they are fully aware of the intentions of the other.
As soon as they became clear that that was where it was rooted, they could dig in and decide if that was how they wanted to respond and/or if that matched up with who they wanted to be now. We can’t change something until we’re aware of what “it” is. Until we wake up, so to speak. Our purpose states our aim as builders – to awaken, challenge, and transform. It always stars with waking up.
This client woke up, and is now doing the work to decide HOW he wants to change – he’s challenging himself. What he does with that, his actions, will decide how he transforms. He’s doing the work. How about you?
