Redwood trees, famous in part for how big and tall they grow, are not solo artists. In fact their roots are too shallow to sustain them – they’d topple over without support. Their roots are in fact a root system – intertwined with the roots of other Redwood trees. That system allows them to grow extremely tall without becoming top heavy and blowing over at the first big wind.
Same is true of humans. If we don’t have a deep support system – friends, family, truth tellers – we blow over when real adversity hits. If you’re trying to make it alone with shallow roots, slow down and figure out where you need to connect with others. Where do you need to expand your root system and make yourself a little more resilient to the hard things life will throw at you?
