All aboard

Is your team super clear on the why and the aim behind any project or strategic decision? Probably less so than you think. A client of mine launched into speaking about a project today and quickly lost me in the details. They were clear on where they were headed, but there weren’t any passengers on board with them. I slowed them down and asked if this is what they do with their team. Too often, the answer is yes.

Got it. Work to do. Slow down, practice clarifying, rinsing, connecting your team to melody lines and a CCD why. Their PA this week is to write out the project, distill it down to melody lines, and then practice connecting it to another.

If you’ve repeated the why so many times that you’re sick of it, your team might just be starting to catch on. Not because they’re not capable, but because this is human nature. We must hear things multiple times before it catches. We get focused on the wrong things, or perhaps the leader isn’t as clear as he or she thinks they are. So, leader, slow down and practice connecting your team to the why more often and with far more clarity. I bet you’ll find a lot more passengers on board with you.
