Hedonia vs Eudaimonia

Hedonia is the pursuit of pleasure. The hedonistic lifestyle where decisions are made based on how much pleasure and enjoyment they bring me. Eudaimonia is a little more nuanced. It’s the pursuit of happiness via pursuing meaning and/or purpose. Happiness is the lagging output, not the aim. Those who pursue meaning and purpose find happiness along the way.

Research shows that those who pursue hedonia wind up less happy again and again, compared to those who pursue Eudaimonia. Hedonia is not bad in and of itself. It becomes a problem when its pursued as the aim, or pursued in the belief that it will create lasting happiness. Eudaimonia is harder work, no doubt. Getting into flow, doing meaningful things – rewarding, not always easy.

At the intersection of Hedonia and Eudaimonia is the perhaps the very best work we’ll do – the most interesting and engaging work. Work that is meaningful AND that lights you up. In BTL parlance, pursue both purpose and passion. Know both and keep working to find the intersection in work and play.
