Judas…

We think there can’t be much worse than a slow, painful death. There is. And, none of us gets out of here without experiencing it. Great Leaders are not exempt…

Jesus had Judas. Our most prolific president and illustrious founder, George Washington, had Benedict Arnold. Marcus Aurelius had both brother (Lucius) and right hand man (Cassius). William Wallace had Robert the Bruce. Socrates had his. Homer did as well. You will too, friend. Nothing stings like betrayal. Nothing. So, friend/leader, do not imagine yourself to be the exception. Expect some of those closest to you to turn against you. Do not be surprised when your Brutus (Julius Caesar was) stabs you in the back.

Remember revenge is not the best response. The best response is to use the betrayal and betrayer as the way forward – the obstacle becomes the way. Marcus did not seek revenge against brother or friend. Jesus demonstrated abundant Grace. William won over Robert. George rallied his remaining officers to better anticipate the Brit’s next move. Benedicts betrayal turned the tide of war, just now how he intended.

Betrayal stings. Use the sting, Leader. “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Thanks, Marcus.

Live hard. Love harder…
