Freedom…

Recently Miss and I had dinner with old friends and fellow grandparents. Shared lots of stories and laughs about our precious little ones. One, however, seared my sorriness.

The grandparents were riding a train with their grandchildren, far from home. The train, as they are prone to do, made many stops prior to the grandparents reaching their destination. On one of those stops, one of the grandchildren (under 8 years old) unexpectedly hoped off the train just before the door closed. Shocked, Grandma let out a guttural scream for help! The train did not move. Door opened. Child retrieved. All is well.

After a few moments time, Grandma asked a question trying to turn this into a learning moment. She asked her grandson what it felt like when he realized he was alone in a strange land. To her amazement (mine too), he replied with one word – “Freedom.”

You and I, friend, are a lot like this child. We think we know best. We want freedom to do our own thing and don’t want to be led by our Heavenly Father. Truth be told, most human struggles come from our rebellious nature. Our misplaced trust in ourselves. We over value some false sense of freedom and choose to go it a lone – one giant L of a difference from All ONE. Damn.

God, help me surrender to your way. God, help me seek your hand, not push it away. God, help me remember you want the best of me because you want the best for me. God, help me not be so easily satisfied.

”We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
