If you have a performance edge, you will be seen as an ass at times. By that I mean that you will be an irritant and will make people uncomfortable. You will agitate others to achieve their best and they will not always enjoy or appreciate that. It’s a natural and unavoidable byproduct of creating high performance teams and systems.
Being an ass is not the same thing as being an asshole. The difference is in the how. If you denigrate others, mock them, belittle them in your efforts to drive performance…you are an asshole. The how matters a hell of a lot. This is the essence of truth in love. Truth will oftentimes hurt (never harm). Unavoidable. Creating pain on top of the truth – that’s avoidable. Let the truth drive the discomfort. Speak it freely, speak it in love.
