If you want to change the world, change yourself. It sounds trite but I see it happen over and over again with my clients. Too often we try to force it in the opposite direction. We want to see change in others, so we try to force them or cajole them to change. Doesn’t work. We humans resist that like crazy.
What does work is turning that finger back toward ourselves and deciding how I need to change rather than how I want another to change. What is this situation teaching me and what’s the work that I need to do on myself? Perhaps it’s to choose better battles. Perhaps to have higher standards for myself. Do some writing, ask a truth teller…get clear on where you need to do some work and get after it.
On the other side you’ll likely begin to notice others changing, often the ones you wanted to change. They’re changing in reaction to your change. As a result of who you are rather than how you’re trying to force their change.

What is it about ‘human nature’ that wants us to change others ? Control ? Lack of willingness to look at Self ? Do we think we are wiser than others ? Lack of awareness ?
No wonder Jesus said .. ‘remove the plank in your own eye, before removing the splinter in your Brothers” … The Jews were not permitted to have wood nor could they afford it. Wood was scarce and stone was used. The ‘plank’ that Christ is referring to is not a 2×4 from Home Depot, but rather the ‘header’ that went over the entrance of the stone house. No Plank, no house. The ‘planks’ were heavy and were ‘set’. What an illustration. I’m not smart, just went to Israel 10 years ago and learned this stuff.
Thanks for the reminder Rachel.
