What’s the story?

A man is not hurt so much by what happens, as by his opinion of what happens.” – Montaigne

Our beliefs and internal stories shape how we interpret events. A conflict at work can be viewed as catastrophic, or it can be viewed from a variety of more productive viewpoints. Perhaps its an opportunity to work through a deeper problem that may lead to a breakthrough, perhaps its clarity that this isn’t the right place for you. A win either way.

What story are you telling yourself about a current problem? Is it serving you? If not, examine your story and the beliefs (likely self-limiting beliefs) that drive it. What do you want to do with those stories and beliefs? What other ones would better serve you that are equally or more true? Practice telling yourself, and more importantly, living out, those new beliefs and stories.
