Get the hell out of the weeds, leader. I mean this in two ways. First, be crystal clear on your why, first and most. That will drive the what and how. Way too many leaders get caught up trying to figure out all the details of the what and how on the front end. Death sentence for most plans. Figure out the why first. It gives clarity, direction, and boundaries to the what and the how.
Secondly, DO more, and do it earlier and faster. Stop coming up with the perfect plan on the front end. Iterate and learn instead.
Here’s an example. Two teams have a 6 month timeline for product launch. Team A spends 2 weeks planning, does a soft launch, and then iterates for the next 5.5 months. Team B plans out the perfect product for 5.5 months, then builds and launches this “perfect plan.” Which product do you think will be more desirable? It’s obvious, but of course the team with a 2.5 month head start will be ahead. They’ve got more real feedback from the market and have had a ton of opportunities to iterate and learn what works. Obvious as it may seem I can almost guarantee you spend way too much time planning, leader. DO MORE. Know your why, plan the basics in a short time frame, launch and learn. DO. MORE.
