The Enemy

The enemy of BTL is speed. The enemy of deep meaningful work is speed. The enemy of present and connected relationships is speed. The enemy of a purposeful and meaningful life is speed.

We delude ourselves into thinking that we’re exerting some measure of control over our world, ourselves, our emotions, our relationships, our work, etc, when we move faster and get more done. The truth is, like an alcoholic, we’re simply numbing the feelings and exacerbating the problems.

Frickin SLOW DOWN. This doesn’t mean go slow forever. At times speed is warranted and necessary. Speed with aim and purpose. Don’t, however, be the hamster spinning the wheel faster and faster and going nowhere. Slow down. Get clear. Set your aim. Once you know where to deploy your speed, do so. You’ll also then know where you want to stay slow, and why. Said differently, you’ll now know the pace you actually want to live your life at, and you’ll be at peace with the reality of life’s constraints.

  1. A timely reminder Rachel. Thank you. I can definitely get caught in the speed trap. I have found it useful to ask, what is driving the need for speed? Simple enough question, often a more complex answer.

Are there other ways people check in with the driver for speed?
