My favorite team practice, by far, is playing with nine golfers, two coaches, and one birdie. These twelve make one helluva team. Why are they my favorite? Simple. They are doing the work. Not just a few. ALL of them.
Their ranking is not reflective of their greatness. Results are always a lagging indicator. Preparation. Preparation. Preparation. Process. Process. Process. Outcomes will come. We’re only on practice ONE.59 and the oneness we felt in the room yesterday was some kind of freakin’ magic. Bullshit has all but disappeared. Truth in anger is rare. Truth in Love? Common amongst the uncommon. Damn.
Yesterday, Jimmy told a story of when his golfing career flipped. He changed his mind. Made a couple word changes he told the team. Here they are. This is HUGE.
Instead of telling himself “go big or go home,” he replaced it with one BIG word changes. Go BIG and go home. And, before every shot he gave his ball a word too. “I’ll follow you wherever you go.” Freakin’ magic. Here’s why. Go big or go home is classic either or thinking. Close relative? Do or die. The brain prefers you “and” it instead. Go BIG and go home tells the brain we’re doing this and we’re going home. No death threat. Just matter of fact. This is the first discipline of great improv theatre. The actors know the brains will only find flow together if we simply go wherever the last dude went. They never “but.” Only “and.” I’ll follow you wherever you go, tells the brain to relax. Frees the mind. Classic. It’s what makes improv funny, I emphatically told this team.
The way you talk to yourself under duress either locks you up or locks you in. One freaks you out. The other frees you up. STOP trash talking yourself, friend. The grass is always greener where you water it. Water the positive thoughts. STOP watering all other bullshit and wasted banter. This team is learning to take the trash out and leave the good in. You? Slow down and reflect on the words you speak to yourself under duress. Maybe you need to change a word or two. Damn.
