A client of mine sensed something was off with one of his teammates. Heading down the wrong path. So, he caught his teammate in the hallways and asked a simple question.
“How you doing?” Teammate response was typical. “I’m great.”
So, the leader asked again. “How you really doing?” The response was slightly different – “I’m fine,” the reply came sheepishly. Here comes the money moment. “So, your first response was great and second go ’round it’s fine. There’s a difference. Likely a B1G one. Wanna tell me the truth?” Eye contact made. Teammate sensed his leaders caring. Tears welled up. Words came out wobbly. Guard down. Truth spilled out. Crazy conflict surfaced. Leader had no idea. The teammate had been heading down the wrong path and hiding it. Once trust was built, truth somehow showed up and out.
Freedom reigned.
Most conflict is simply a conversation to be had. This I believe. One of my most bolted on worldview statements. See it everyday. What conflict are you mining for leader? You know it’s there. Don’t be afraid to dig it up and get it out in the open air. Conflict stuck in someone’s craw is a cancer. Get it out. BTL Leaders mine for conflict. Normal leaders let it lie. Problems don’t age well and they don’t go away when you let them sit. Your team is conflicted. Your job is to free ’em up. John 8:32 is my favorite verse for this very reason. “Someday you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”
Mine for it, leader. Stop burying it. STOP seeking white wash and wishful thinking. Know truth, know the way. No truth. No way. Mine for it. Damn.
