I had a client who wanted to take some time for “high-level strategizing.” I’m all for high-level strategy. But before we get to strategy, I asked: What’s the vision the strategy is meant to serve?
Strategy makes a big difference—but only if you have a clear understanding of where you’re trying to go and why.
The order of operations matters… a lot. It doesn’t matter how well you row if you aren’t fit enough to pull hard and maintain your technique for 250 strokes. Fitness comes before… well, everything.
Structure before improv. You must command the fundamentals and understand the structure of your framework or system before you can improvise, add nuance, or play freely. Otherwise, it’s just undisciplined chaos.
Order of operations matters. Get it wrong, and you—and your system—will be chasing your tail: constantly changing direction, frustrated by a lack of clarity and performance.
Struggling with your strategy? Get clearer on your vision and your “why.” Your strategies will become more apparent as that clarity grows.
