486 Days…

I retired from my public accounting career at the ripe age of 22 but I wanted to make my return to the blog to talk some numbers.

I have been lapping through Becoming Built to Lead since it was published in 2020, my first full year as a builder. I’m on my 4th time through the book and just wrote on Day 50 this week. Thus, I have written utilizing Becoming Build to Lead as my daily prompt 1,581 times in my life.  I view each one of them as a potential rep to look in the mirror to get better and clearer.

I’m blessed to receive writing from 35 individuals each week that use Becoming Built to Lead in a similar format. The pace varies but the direction is generally the same. The biggest revelation over the last several years walking clients through our framework, there is a critical milestone that occurs with every single one of them.

486 days is the inflection point. Why? You will have:

An entire climb through Becoming Built to Lead, sending your writing daily (or weekly) to your builder and in some cases a select few on your team.

A 2nd climb through Becoming Built to Lead all the way back to day 121 – Sunday Scoring.

Why is this the crux of the mountain? By this point every client has:

  1. A clear core trending toward a strong CORE that they have had dozens of reps to rinse and attempt to align their lives with.
  2. An OPUS that is energizing to pursue. A mountaintop where the clouds are clear and we can see the path ahead.
  3. A set of strategies & principles to guide your behavior and help us choose Productive Actions every week.
  4. A weekly check in via Sunday Scoring on how to uses these tools to their maximum potential.

Once those 4 are in place, reaching the mountaintop is more a journey of persistence than anything else. Summits will be reached if you stay the course and keep doing the work.

How long does it take to get to this point in the journey? Let’s do some math:

  • If you write 1 day a week, you will get there in 486 weeks (9.34 years)
  • If you write 3 days per week, you will get there in 162 weeks (3.1 years)
  • If you write 5 days per week you will get there in 97.2 weeks (1.87 years)
  • If you write 7 days per week you will get there in 69.42 weeks (1.34 years)

Ill finish with a famous Built to Lead line: You choose. Your choices have consequences.

I hope you use this as a call to action to write more. I’ll be doing the same.
