Flip the norm

Great building, great leading, great YOUing is always more about subtraction than addition. Cut away the bullshit. Cut away the fluff. Cut away the distractions. Most talk around the important things. They add committees, they add topics for discussion, they add a new routine, they add more, more, more. Cut out the noise. What’s THE thing?

If you’re not sure, start with why. Why am I here at X company? Why am I in this line of work? Why am I here on this earth? When you’ve got your why nailed, everything else comes a little easier. Who am I relative to that why? Once you’re clear on why you’re here and who you are, it becomes a lot easier to figure out the how.

As Gu recently reminded a few of us, most get this backwards. They start with how – read a bunch of how to books, figure out how to get better at your current job. Then a mid life crisis kicks in and you start to ask “who am I”? Maybe you hit some measure of success. And then, hopefully, you start to move from success to significance and ask yourself why am I here? What legacy do I want to leave?

Flip the norm, invert the order. Start with why, then who, then how. Harder out of the gates, far more significant and meaningful.
