You better love being an accountant. I’ll never forget Chet saying this during a team practice almost a decade ago so there must be some truth in it. Let’s explore.
One of the most consistent things that I observe about a clients initial “love to” list from Day 16 in BBTL is that very rarely is there much of anything about work in the list. It’s almost always centered on things outside of their work, and that’s even true for our business owner clients. Some of that has to do with the wording of the prompt but it it always a bit eye opening to the client when I point it out.
I am not implying or assuming our clients don’t love significant elements of their work, every high performer has to if they want to sustain their performance for a decade but sometimes its hard for them to specifically pinpoint and articulate the “love to” work activities in their day to day. I reframed the question recently to try and tease out some work love tos from a different angle – in your day to day, what brings you “the juice”? In other words, where in your day do you feel that pulsing positive energy that fills your tank?
If life is an energy management problem, then we must specifically identify what brings us the jet fuel – the love of the work that lights us up. That is some of the initial ingredients of an OPUS that you can pursue for a lifetime.
Go back to your love to list in your CORE. What lights you up when you are pursuing your work OPUS? How can we integrate that list more starting today?
