OLD

I am also gaining a habit that C.S. Lewis taught. For every new book read an OLD one.

Here’s an OLD favorite of mine. Penses, by Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)… another dead French guy. Here’s one of my favorite thoughts from Penses…which btw means ‘thoughts.”

“Being unable to cure death, wretchedness, and ignorance, men have decided, in order to be happy, not to think about such things. I have often said that the sole cause of man’s unhappiness is that he does not know how to stay quietly in his room. The only good thing for men therefore is to be DIVERTED from thinking of what they are, either by some occupation which takes their mind off it, or by some novel and agreeable passion which keeps them BUSY, like gambling, hunting, some absorbing show, in short by what is called DIVERSION.”

What do you think?

Do you know who you are?

Can you live quietly without the “white buds” in your ears?

Do you need the TV on to “fall” asleep?

What happens to your “mind” when you stay quietly in your room?

Are you living your life inspired by your CORE purposes, or are you purposeful in your DISTRACTION?

Why?

  1. I appreciate your suggestion that it’s time to turn off the distractions.

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
    — Groucho Marx

Groucho might have been a perpetrator, but he certainly chose not to be a victim. You will never learn anything about yourself while watching television.
