Bill’s BOOK…

CEO’s ask me all the time, before they engage the BTL team, how we justify our cost. They want to know how they’ll measure our impact and when the results will start showing UP on the bottom line. I NEVER give them an answer that they like. I promise them that there is NO quantitative measure that we can tie to our work. We cannot take credit for NUMBERS.

Here’s what I do promise. Here’s what the BTL builder’s and I always deliver. I promise the CEO that people will leave. People will “wake up” and decide that “this work” is not for them. These people will self select out. I also promise “the boss” that leaders will wake up and ask people to leave. People that they have been “tolerating” for far tooooooooooo long. People will get fired as a result of engaging us. Sound good so far?

And, some people will “fire up” and become 100% sold out to their leader, to their team, to their calling, and to their cause. Some people will become a “soul on fire.” These souls will change the world they touch and light others on fire. Very cool. BTL will get into these individuals DNA and change the collective DNA of the team.

How much is that worth?

Yesterday one such person, I believe, that is firing up is a young rebel. His name is Bill. What metric did I use to justify such a claim? Glad you asked. I just used all my senses. I tuned in and here’s what I FELT. I felt Bill’s loss when he misplaced his 12 Essentials of Excellence playbook. He was pissed and depressed at the same time. He told me he had lost it and nobody else cared to help him find it. He looked me in the eyes and said, “it’s my BOOK… AND all my WRITING is in there.” He was a desperate carpenter. He had lost his most valued tool.

I stopped the practice and commanded an all out search for Bill’s BOOK. One of his fellow builder’s found it. Bill was whole again.

What’s it worth to you to create more carpenters like Bill?

What happens when people lose one of your tools?

What gifts are you giving your team besides their paychecks?

What does your team really want from you?

Who are you pouring yourself into in work and life?

What do you TREASURE?

Why?

  1. Hey Chet!
I would like to apologise for loosing my temper yesterday. I have had several challenges attack my personal life as of late. I have been fairly successful controlling my emotions as I have grown and matured over the last few years, and for some reason misplaceing my “life manual” really set me off. Thank you for your compassion and understanding and I look forward to our future practice sessions.
    Bill

  2. No need to apologize. Thank you for your passion for your work and for our work. I LOVE being around people that CARE.
