When we first start to “practice” with a new client and their team we always ask a ton of questions. Here’s two beauties.
One hundred years ago, what were the two greatest influences on an “average” American?
The “answer” is…FAITH and family.
No surprise.
Today, what ARE the two greatest influences on an “average” American?
The “answer” has changed. We are no longer most influenced by our deepest held beliefs and by our closest relatives. We’ve evolved, so to say. Before you read on take a moment and write down what you think.
What are the two greatest influences in your life?
How do you know?
Here’s what almost all the experts say. We now are most influenced by complete strangers that are trying to sell us something and by well, people that we hardly “know” in our companies. Translation. Normal people today are most influenced by whatever MEDIA they have given their ATTENTION and by the people in POWER at their place of work.
Don’t believe me?
Here’s a primer for you…the proof is way too easy.
Read Stanley Milgram’s book titled OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY. This one is 50 years old; kinda meeting you in the middle.
Warning: Reading this book will NOT be entertaining.
What media gets your attention?
Who has the gold where you work?
What are you reading with discipline and LOVE?
How well do you see and understand other perspectives around your deepest held beliefs?
Wait, do you possess deeply held beliefs or is there NO time for that?
Or is THAT simply not in your job description?
