At BTL we believe that most of us are sleepwalking through life. I certainly believe that I am. I am always trying to JOLT myself out of my self induced habits. Crazy isn’t it.
I want to form habits of the heart. I believe that disciplines matter. AND, I want to deeply change to become more of who I really am. This sounds counter intuitive. It is. We are.
Here’s the truth of the matter. Once I find a few habits that are productive, every ounce of me, just wants to “repeat the model baby.” Put it on cruise control and shut the mind down.
Once I find a weight workout that I can do in twenty minutes, seems to hit me but NOT hurt me, I’m ready to rinse and repeat. This lasts about sixty days. By then, I’m bored and the routine is too. My muscles have grown accustomed to the work load, AND, now, they no longer respond. Bummer.
Our bodies, our minds, our spirits, and all that we touch are designed with structure and order. We are made to work a certain way. AND, we are made to jolt ourselves out of these good structures so we can deeply change. Muscles and minds are made to be stretched and pulled in every direction if they are to know which way to go when it really matters. That’s why doubt is essential to deep faith. Do you see it?
Moving on.
One of the best means to change any system is to learn something new. One of the 12 Essentials is around this theme. We believe that a lifetime of learning is essential. This is why we believe that experience is overrated. There are plenty of old, cagy veterans with tons of experience that continue to make the same mistakes. They repeat the model.
What matters is what you learn from your experience and the experience of others. How do you grow from what you and the world have been through. This requires slowing down and reflecting NOT rushing headlong into the next experience. Make sense?
Now for the practical piece to this rant. Bet you are ready for that!! Here it is. Do NOT miss this. This is HUGE. I’m always looking for new ideas and find a great many of them in books, in conversation, and on the net. Here’s a great source of ideas for me AND maybe for you as well.

Just listened to an excellent 15-minuter from Mihaly on “Flow”. . . .(ok, it was 18 minutes b/c he was so into it he lost track of the time)
p.s. Very interesting chart at the end to show the relationships between level of skill & level of challenge, and the resulting feelings that result from different combinations. . .
