If you buy the idea that we need to think of fear as a drug, here’s a hopeful and encouraging AND.
Research done independently by Stanley Milgram, an American, and Solomon Asch, a Polish Jew, gives convincing evidence that we are easily swayed by the group. Especially swayed by the figure of authority. This research was conducted following WWII, mostly in an attempt to understand how the Germans could have been so “compliant.”
Of course, what they discovered, is that the desire and real tendency for humans to “follow the leader” and or “follow the group” is NOT limited to just the German humans. Surprise, surprise. Humans, especially when they are afraid, will follow the leader and or the mob. Hello…Where o’ where is the promised seed of encouragement?
Here it is. Do NOT miss this. This is HUGE.
One ally is all you need.
To STAND.
Research done years ago by Milgram, Asch, and today by countless neuroscientists like Gregory Berns, confirms that one ally is all you need to stand. Berns, in his book titled, iconoclast, says it well. “From the iconoclast’s perspective, this means that the most effective strategy for dealing with a group is to recruit one like minded individual. Although two people may not be sufficient to sway the group’s opinion, having one ally is all that is needed to maintain one’s own judgement.” Very cool.
One ally is all you need to stand up for what is right. To stand up for a new direction you want to take your team. To stand up to peer pressure. To stand up to the power of your Board members. To stand up to your top performers that are wrecking chaos with every deal and with every associate. To stand up to your biggest fears and walk into them. To stand up and speak from your heart, without notes, without fear, without tele-prompters, and simply deliver the TRUTH. To stand up and say thanks, good job, and have those you are thanking, actually sense your thankfulness. To stand up and help those in your system that are less fortunate and smile instead of keeping score.
To stand for grace, mercy, and justice, instead of the normal stand for greed, reciprocity, and what’s “fair for me.” Yes, one ally, alongside you, can give you the courage to take a STAND…
Think of the BTL Band as your ally. We help our family, friends, and clients…
STAND.
