A couple of my clients have been struggling with gaining clarity around purpose. They’ve written and thought about their purpose and their company’s purpose for awhile now and it still isn’t there yet. They’re frustrated that they can’t come up with the goods. They keep writing and reflecting and yet it doesn’t feel authentic yet to who they are.
By way of reminder, we define purpose, for your company as follows:
Purpose is the defining statement of your work. It should be clear, concise, and direct. AND, it should serve as a compass pointing you and your teams toward your preferred work. The work that represents your masterpiece, your OPUS.
Our purpose, at BTL, is to transform a collection of individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE that is BUILT TO LEAD.
We’ve been at this going on eight years now and this purpose statement arose out of countless rewrites only in the past few months. Discovering and living on purpose is the quintessential journey.
What has seemed to help our clients is understanding that the discovery process around purpose and so many activities is best described as “chunky.” Chunky activities are not smooth nor do they feel fluid. That’s just the way they are. Embrace that and you will be on your way.
Sit down and write version 1.0 and title it as such. Tomorrow do the same and title it 2.0. Every day try this approach for a solid 30 days. You will be amazed how much progress you will have made. Like so much of life, the magic lies in the act of doing.
The problem, of course, is that we want instant results and almost all progress is “chunky” at first. Get comfortable with chunky and get disciplined with doing.
Slow down and reflect.
AND, now chunk one out…
