It’s been an amazing couple of weeks for The Band. We have all been amazed, astonished, shocked, and surprised by the loss of our friend and fellow Builder, Larry Allen.
I want to share how amazed I have been–but NOT astonished, shocked or surprised–by the actions of my brothers, and sisters, in The Band since. I am privileged to be a part of this TEAM. We have dealt with matters of life and death in these last two weeks. Big and small. Profound and mundane. We have practiced “the art of being with,” as Larry put it. We have held each other up, and many others. We have notified friends and colleagues of our friend’s death. We have grieved, privately and publicly. We have prayed the same way. In sadness, we paradoxically rejoice for Larry. We have gladly picked up some of his pro bono commitments. This week, we have worked through the details of how best we can help manage Larry’s legacy and care for his family and clients. All the while as we care for our own families, friends, and clients.
In all of this, we have practiced what we preach. We have listened to one another deeply, for complete understanding. We have spoken in our dialect of “clear, concise, direct, with respect.” We have drawn on strong CORES (and getting stronger). We have practiced. We are getting better TOGETHER. We are unified, but all still very weirdly different. We are ONE.
This is amazing but not surprising. Why? Because it is exactly what we were doing just before Larry died. It’s what we did in the aftermath. And it’s what we will do every day until WE die, by the GRACE of God.
Remember this; none of us is getting out of here alive.
