Racing toward retirement…

Earlier this week I had a client describe one of his teammates and their big dream.  Here’s what they said.  Do not miss this.  This might be huge.  This might be you. This might be what most business people think but only a few verbalize.  I’m really not sure.  Here it is…

His teammate told him that he is “racing toward retirement.”

How does this thought hit you?

What are you racing toward?

Is retirement your goal?

Are you saving up your dollars so someday you have enough F.U. money?

Why would we want to race toward quitting?

When one discovers their OPUS, does their big dream race away or toward retirement?

Tell me more, my friend.

Tell me more….

  1. Chet, one of my quasi clients in down South here told me last month his big dream was a “comfortable retirement.” When I responded that what he wanted, essentially, was “to wait for death in pleasant surroundings” he did not react well. What’d I say that was different from what he’d said?

It’s clear I’ve lost my old skills in diplomacy. Good riddance.

  2. Oh yeah…I meant to answer your question. I want to “burn out bright” so maybe I drop dead in the middle of explaining Opus vs Labor to my 5,465th client.

  3. It turns out that “retirement” was just a temporary thing for me – more like a sabbatical. Time to travel and reflect. A chance to take a month riding my motorcycle with friends across America and back. All good stuff.

But there’s lots more life to live (I hope), lots more to learn, and most importantly, lots of people to serve.
