This past week was full. I started with a new client and met a fantastic and intriguing possibility. I facilitated a father/son conversation with two of my clients that was filled with conflict and full of hope. I met with the Band and had my first visit into the Sully estate. We had a bunch of laughs and continued to make progress. I met with a variety of my clients and listened, learned, and clarified some productive actions. This week was prototypical. AND, this week was unique.
This week gave me a clear view of the why behind our work. The world is full of normal people. Normal people are self centered and other controlling. This is the way we all come into this world. Check out any group of toddlers and see how similar they are to any group of adults. The only difference is how well, we adults, disguise our selfishness.
At BTL we believe that a long build is required to flip from normal to really weird. A productive weird, that is. We’re after a small word change that makes a world of difference. Exceptional and weird people are CORE centered and self controlling. This is why we exist. We, each week, at BTL are busy working on our CORE and being a catalyst for yours. Very cool. Moving on…
Krit and Clint came home and, in fact, are still here. We had the Kunks, Sue, Jordan, Keturah, Andrew, and Taylor welcome Krit and her boyfriend. We hung out, shared some meals, played some cards, and laughed a lot. We seared our brains with some memories.
Tonight we’ll go to a Blue Jackets hockey game and cheer on the home team. Turns out Clint likes hockey. I don’t, but tonight, I’ll LOVE being there. Tonight will be a blessing.
AND, this week, I got cut above my left collarbone to remove some more of that nasty skin cancer that continues to surface. AND, this week, I worried about my Miss and her cut that’s coming this next week. This week I experienced being afraid and feeling insecure in my work, with my life, and even with my wife. Again, I was reminded that life is simply NOT up and to the right. Bummer.
My son, Jordan, reminded me, this past week that life is short and to be cherished. He was just out with it over dinner last night. He does that. He’s quiet and to himself, he’s lost in his own world, his own thoughts, his own friends, and all grown up. And then, when you least expect it, he’s out with something that reminds you that he’s thinking of you, too. Beautiful…
This past week was full, typical, and unique. This week, like so much of life, was an opportunity.
I had the opportunity to be blessed this week and I had the opportunity to be bummed. In fact, I was both. Slowly, I’m learning to give my focus toward the blessings and only a passing glance to life’s little bummers. Amazingly, as I build my brain this way, life gets more and more beautiful.
Look for me at the rink tonight. I’ll be the one flapping his jaws, walking from Krit’s section to Tay’s section, and smiling regardless the score…

Because YOU are the one-and-only TOTO. . .you can’t take the bike or the Kansas out of the playful, adventurous boy who is always out of his basket stirring things up and inspiring others to LIVE — not by going to Oz, but through the Builder’s Journey, engaging & aligning your BRAIN, your HEART, and your COURAGE with your BELIEFS.
Even in the face of recurring surgeries for cancer that you don’t talk much about — something that would leave most in self-pity & victimhood — thank you Toto for modeling and sharing yet again that BUILT TO LEAD is about work AND life. Our prayers for you while you recover yet again, and for your family & Mrs. MISS next week for strength and endurance for her surgery. And for a ton of fun tonight with your kids!
