ONE is the one you want…

If you’re leading anyone, anywhere, in any capacity, you are a Leader.  At BTL, we believe that the aim of leading, put simply, is to move those under your leadership.  Simply put and easily understood.  In reality…

REAL, HARD, WORK.

Why so difficult?  Because we’re after a very specific movement.  Not movement that is random or simply movement for movements sake. Not movement that is driven by cashing out or “moving your multiples higher.”  Not movement that is rushed and harried.  Not movement that is driven by fear.  No, none of that.

Movement, instead, that is fueled by your passion, defined by your purpose, and enabled by your process.   AND, movement that is together.  Movement that is aligned and engaged.  Moving as ONE toward you and your teams BIG dream.

Magic.

Sport, business, society, art, it doesn’t matter the endeavor.  This is the aim.  Few hit the mark…

At BTL, we believe that this movement is magic when the team moves as ONE.  Our purpose clearly states that this real, hard, work is our reason for existing.  By way of reminder, here it is again.  Our purpose is…

“To transform a collection of individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE.  ONE team that is BUILT TO LEAD.”

One sentence.  One mouthful.

I’m midway through another read, this ones titled Wooden on Leadership.  John Wooden, is 99 and still teaching.  In fact that would be the melody line from his book…

Substitute teacher for leader.

Page 128 he offers a similar perspective to ours…

“I taught our players to think as ONE, a unit, and not just a collection of independent operators in which every person was out for himself.”

Wooden taught his team how to properly put on their socks, as silly as that sounds.  And, he taught them how to play as ONE, as daunting as that is.  He taught the trivial to the tantamount.  He didn’t just tell his team how to become ONE, he demonstrated it by playing the best team, not necessarily the best players.  He demonstrated through his action.  He showed them.

Yup.

He started every first practice on the court, taking off first his shoes and then his socks.  Huh?  Yup, it’s true.  He took off his socks and showed grown men, the top collegiate players of their time, how to properly put them on.

Trivial to the tantamount.

He knew why he taught and he got the team to buy in.  He was a teacher worth a little of your study. You might just learn something worth applying.

What are you teaching those that you lead?

How do you know they are learning?

What are your best means of demonstrating the outcomes that you are after?

Are you becoming more a collection of highly paid “loners,” or more a unit of ONE?

Tell me more, my friend.

Tell me more…

  1. Ken Blanchard (author of the “One Minute Manager” series) would agree. He dedicated an entire page to the single quote:

    “Leader and Educator are SYNONYMOUS”.
