The cold this morning was unbelievably bitter. However, today, this didn’t stop anyone from doing what they always do on the second day of the new year.
It NEVER does.
It could have been thirty below and they would have been undaunted. The snow could have been coming down in blankets and they would have somehow found their way forward. The ice could have been coming in sheets and still they would have made it. Why?
Because on January 2, 2010 just like every January 2nd of every other year, millions of Americans were headed to the gym. They were bound and determined to live out their resolution.
For awhile.
History shows us that by the end of February, most of these gym goers will simply be gone. They just will.
In 2010 don’t make resolutions. Instead, build your resolve. Take the time to catch a big dream that means something to you, picture what it will feel like to live it, and start with some baby steps to move yourself forward. Find another that shares your passion and go for it.
AND, surround yourself with reminders.
Reminders help strengthen our resolve. They just do. If you’re planning a “huge” family hike across the rockies, keep pictures in your office, find some cool websites from people that have gone before, and sign up for some “tweets” from a couple world class trek leaders.
Your resolve will be tested in 2010. As Jim noted earlier, it will really help you in your work and life goals to have a physical plant that is hitting on all cylinders. You can do it. It will simply take some resolve. Some personal discipline. It always does.
I’m betting you’ll stick to whatever resolutions you made if you catch a big dream around it, surround yourself with some like minded humans, and give yourself plenty of reminders to keep you going when the lousy month of February arrives.
Bon voyage, my friends…
