DECADE.
When you hear the term “20/20,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
For most of us, it seems, when we hear those words we hear “perfect.” For most of us the term is correlated with our vision. When we see something with 20/20 vision, we see it with perfect clarity. Make sense?
Picture, if you will, the year 2020. Imagine what it will look like when you arrive to the next happy new decade. Now, take a look back. Think back to Y2K. Do you remember the panic around the last decades arrival? Does it seem possible that a full ten years have passed since the turn of the century?
Talk about the speed of change. Amazing, huh.
Here’s the challenge. Start today writing your big dreams for your work and life in the year 2020. Get “perfect clarity” about your purpose for this next decade. Write this out until it you can see your vision with 20/20 clarity. Once you’ve got that clarity, start to write down the productive actions that move you toward your vision. This will be so cool and so energizing.
Some food for thought around my 2020 clarity.
First off. It will arrive with even more speed. The pace of change is not going away. If you do NOT design your future, the world will choose your default and it will be consumed with your work. Your life will, sadly, mostly be lost. Who knows what term will replace “24/7.” So, the time to prepare is upon us all.
For me, the vast majority of my big dreams for this decade are around my relationships. As I enter this happy new decade, I’m very clear about how I will keep score, what I want, where I’m headed, with whom I hope to travel, the places I want to see (and with whom), the work I hope to accomplish (and with whom), and who I hope to become along the way.
I’ve never felt more peaceful, more purposeful, and more passionate.
AND…
In 2020 I will be 61 years old, the Lord willing. My Mom, most likely will be gone. My father in law, will either be a century old or he too will be gone. Thankfully, God will remain the constant. Many of my family and friends will, unexpectedly be gone as well. We simply cannot predict. We are, in fact, out of…
CONTROL.
Jordan will be 36 and living with Keturah (we hope) in some crazy part of this planet. Andrew will be 33 and working who knows where. Krits will be thirty and I can only imagine…
Taylor will be 25 and hopefully still wanting me around.
My bride will be trailing me by a few years and we’ll be celebrating our 38th year together. We will be traveling the world visiting our children, our grandchildren, and all the place we want to see before we’re…
GONE.
BUILT TO LEAD will be celebrating it’s 18th year and will be an amazing collection of crazy individuals that share some small piece of vision about changing the way people work and live. We will be learning more and more and knowing less and less. AND, we’ll be alright with that fact. BUILT TO FEED will be up and running and giving back to those less fortunate.
I will be more peaceful, more purposeful, and even more passionate. AND, when asked what I see in the decade to come, I’ll simply smile and respond that I’m not certain, I’m certainly not in control, and that I can hardly wait to see. My eyes will sparkle and even twinkle. My face will be more wrinkled, my hair will be thinner, and yet my heart will be even more FILLED. Very cool.
Happy New Decade…
